With your own words agree or disagree to the following discussion (110 words max) Before the modern era, yes, eating animals was morally acceptable because it was necessary to sustain human life. However, now that we have the means to grow and produce enough protein-rich food without the need for animals, I no longer believe it’s morally acceptable, certainly not so, when taking into consideration how the animal industry conducts itself these days, inflicting additional needless harms to animals. Additionally, hunting for sport is especially unethical as it causes harm to the animal, is sometimes ‘canned hunts’ or unfair chase, contributes to hunting a species to endangerment, and is often unnecessary for human consumption. This passage of the text expresses my argument: “this is especially true in much of the developed world, where nutritious alternatives are easily found...If meat eating is not necessary for human health, the meat becomes a luxury good. And then, we may ask whether it’s morally justified to cause animal suffering in support of a human indulgence” (463). Even if those aren’t strong enough reasons, we can approach it from purely utilitarian or deontological point of view, there’s no use today in continuing to eat animals. The text also explains that raising livestock animals for slaughter because they require vast amounts of land, water, grains, and produce harmful waste in the form of methane gas which further damages the environment. Converting more farms toward vegetarian products would be far more efficient and less wasteful, more sustainable for human population growth, and especially less harmful to animals. Both Mill and Kant would support vegetarianism as killing is a morally wrong act, and if it’s okay to kill animals, doesn’t that devalue all life, and pave the way toward devaluing human life? I believe it’s our duty to encourage the sanctity of all life, because beginning the process of relying on fewer animal sources will be better for human and animal life alike, since it puts less strain on the environment and agricultural resources, and hey, it’s also healthier!
