The purpose of this assignment is to examine servant leadership practices with regard to religions and cultures other than those associated with Christianity.
While servant leadership is often associated with Christianity and the Bible, one could argue that it is compatible with most religions and philosophies and that it transcends cultures.
This assignment presents you with an opportunity to explore other cultures, philosophies, and religions and asks you to think critically about how servant leadership practices are apparent in other religions and cultures.
First, begin by selecting and examining one cultural context and one religious viewpoint outside of mainstream Christianity. Then in a 1,250 to 1,500 word essay, discuss the following:
1. Explain how the principles of servant leadership are evident in your chosen culture and religion?
2. Identify similarities and differences between servant leadership philosophies and the values from your selected cultural context and religious viewpoint.
3. Identify specific examples of servant leadership practices evident in your chosen culture and religion in your essay.
You are required to locate a total of four articles that address servant leadership in your chosen cultural context and religious viewpoint. Two of the articles should examine servant leadership from a different cultural perspective and two articles should examine servant leadership from a different religious perspective. The articles must be peer reviewed and have been published within the last 5 years. You must use and cite the articles within each content area in your paper to strengthen your claims.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Servant Leadership in Diverse Context

There are various types of leadership in leadership and management, Servant leadership being one of them. Servant leadership is among the most successful leadership styles and is recognized for its efficiency in small and starting institutions. What is servant leadership? Servant leadership is a leadership style that the leader serves rather than the people they lead. Servant leaders expand services to people and institutions (Greenleaf, 1970). Servant leadership style has the tendency to promote foresight, ethical use of power, trust, listening, and the people a leader leads feel empowered.  Servant leadership is based on some regard to the welfare of the people led and therefore borrows a lot from religious perspectives on leadership and a strong adherence to the cultural beliefs and norms of a people. The style was developed by Robert K. Greenleaf in 1970 to describe leadership as intrinsic and needing morality in a leading role.

Islam

In most Arabic countries and most precisely Iran and Pakistan, the largest religion is Islam. Islam has a substantial following in the Asian continent, which the leading population of Islam in Iran which respect to the total population. Islam, just like other religions in the world, plays a significant role in equipping the leaders and the people with the right moral endowment to lead. Islam is Abrahamic monotheistic religion that teaches Muhammad as a messenger of God (Jayyusi et al., 2008). The religion has over 1.9 billion followers across the world, making it the second-largest religion in the world based on following. Islam religion started in Mecca, which is modern-day Saudi Arabia, following the early life of Muhammad and has since then spread to the rest of the world at a fast rate. Today Islam is recognized by everyone with its subscription or not. Islam religion means submission to God and is guided by five major pillars. Shahada; declaring one’s faith in God and believing in Muhammad, Salat meaning to pray five times in a day, Zakat; giving to the needy, swan; to fast during Ramadan and to visit Mecca at least once in a lifetime if able.

Similarities

There are various similarities between Islam and the servant leadership style.  The similarities are embedded on the pillars of Islam and precisely on Zakat, which means helping those in need and Shahada, having faith in God and believing in Muhammad.  A servant leader is a helping leader and always serves to seek and identify areas of weakness that those he leads need to come up with the best results from them. The strong faith in God and the belief in Muhammad, as stated in hadeeth that “the leader of the people is the servant,” makes a leader lead the respect to the value of the people he leads (Gandolfi et al., 2017).
