Roots (2016) Film Review

In this assignment, you will watch the  4-part series, Roots (the 2016 production of this film) and offer a review that outlines: (1) the lessons it offers about agency and freedom, and (2) how the life stories of enslaved peoples can help inform solutions for contemporary issues. Based on the above objectives and your interpretation of the film, you will develop a 3 page review, using the following template: Film Review Template Title of the Film:        What is the title of the film on which this review is based? Source:     Enter the reference for the show (use MLA or APA format for referencing) A Catchy Phrase:     Craft a nifty title for your review that sums up your take on the show and which will grab your readers’ attention Context:    What does the show & reading convey about the challenges enslaved and free people of color faced during slavery? What specific social, economic and physical hardships did they experience? This is a critical section to develop extensively. Critical Lens:    What can these experiences tell us about how enslaved and free people of African descent are defining, contesting, and/or negotiating power? What are the assumptions about power in slavery you had that this insight challenge? This is critical section to develop extensively. Questions of the Human    Condition: What are the lessons the show hints at in terms of any of the following: •    coping in the face of hardships and how ordinary people can channel their energies to affect change •    how ordinary humans develop a strong sense of resilience to overcome personal and social problems •    how people chart a course for hope when it feels like there is none, in the midst of political and economic insecurity •    and the power of having community/group support Significance:  What value does this insight from re-examining the history hold for your personal growth?
