Risk factors of addiction

There are several risk factors associated with addiction. The first predominant factor is child abuse. Child abuse is among the detrimental aftermaths of addition, mainly when parents are in any drug addiction. Abuse, in this case, may take the form of physical or emotional torment that hinder children from achieving maximum growth and socialization. The second predominant risk factor is low self-esteem due to the failure to meet life objectives. People who are into addiction tend to lag in the attainment of their life objectives, mainly because they spend their resources in the wrong ways (Hagele et al., 2014). Such people feel that they are left out in the community and that everybody else is doing fine. Finally, mental health disorders also play a central role in determining how well a person copes with addiction. Constant abuse of substances makes people disoriented in their lives; this steady diversion from normalcy makes people experience mental instability that leads to mental health complication in the long-run (Hagele et al., 2014).

Schools, families, and communities at large have a role to play in neutralizing addiction risk factors among its members.
