Background: We have discussed rhetorical analysis and how it can apply to various situations. In particular, we have focused on strategy and how different audiences have specific requirements. By satisfying these needs, writers and rhetoricians can achieve their implicit and explicit goals. Assignment: Write an expository research paper in which you discuss and analyze a specific rhetorical failure. This rhetorical failure must refer to a public mistake made by a company, individual, group, or celebrity. Your essay should discuss questions of purpose, context, audience, and the overall effects. How did this individual or group fail rhetorically? Potential Topics: You are free to write about any rhetorical situation. As long as you are able to describe a specific rhetorical situation (in the form of a tweet, interview, post, essay, speech, video, advertisement or some other incident), it can be appropriate for this essay. Organization and Audience: This essay must include an introduction, a thesis statement, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a conclusion. This essay should be appropriate for a generally neutral academic audience. Purpose: This essay gives you the opportunity to think critically about how individuals react to different kinds of information. Additionally, this essay challenges you to analyze how arguments function in different contexts with different groups. Requirements: MLA format, formal writing style, standardized academic English, word count (2,000 words), 5 sources Assessment: Your essay will be assessed based on its structure, format, use of specific language, its adherence to academic conventions, and its use of MLA style.
