Response Essay: Themes in Tartuffe

Moliere's play is a form a comedy that uses several characters such as Dorine, Cleante, Pernelle, orgon, among others. The general moral of Moliere's theatrical piece of work is to discuss the issue of ethics in communication. Following the events of the play, it is easy to note that the author had a key theme in mind on how people interact with each other, how people should be punished for wronging others through justice, and even how people were easily duped during the setting and the era of the play. Tartuffe was first performed in 1664 and was titles “Tartuffe, ou l'Imposteur (Tartuffe the Imposter)," which indicated society was highly dominated by men. The subsequent version of the same play focused on emerging issues in the world, such as religion, politics, and other life affairs. In the play, Tartuffe, I find themes such as religion, morality and ethics, and marriage.

Religion is a way of life that cuts across many communities, even in our societies today. While people hold different religious believes, the idea of worshiping the Creator respected, and people do not joke with it easily. However, Moliere's play presented an idea that he did not fear to joke about the concept of religion. His biggest mockery is to the people that tend to alter how religion should be in a way to gain their interests. The fact that people in Tartuffe tried to benefit themselves through worship can also be seen in today's society where most people "who are expected to be spiritual leaders" are busy enriching themselves and joking with people's believes regarding the return of God. I feel that Moliere's play presents an actual situation of a greedy generation that is ready to manipulate religious for the sake of individual rewards. Most of the characters in Moliere's play were critics of religion either because they felt that it did not add any value in their life or because they thought it was for those who were naïve and gullible.
