INSTRUCTIONS:
Here is the situation: Assume you are a member of the public school board in your community, and there will be a contentious public meeting about students wearing religious artifacts during the school day. As a member of the school board, you have been asked to deliver a brief oral statement addressing relevant aspects of the debate, and you want to be prepared to discuss the dilemma in an informed manner. Answer the following in 300-350 words: To prepare for the meeting, write an analysis of the proposed ban on religious artifacts in public schools. The case has multiple dimensions, including legal, political, religious and familial, but for the purpose of this assignment, focus on communication dimensions. You can use the following questions as a guide for your analysis: Does the wearing of a skullcap, cross or crucifix, and headscarves send a message about one’s religious identity? Might some individuals use the communication of religion to exert power over others? In your experience, is a child’s performance of religion an ascribed or avowed performance of identity, and how does the difference inform this situation? What are the ethical aspects of banning religious artifacts in public places? Is it possible to legislate identity? Remember that in a Situational Analysis we are looking for the following: a) Structure and Organization: Structure your reaction so that your introduction and conclusion refer to the same idea. b) Sources and Evidence: Identification and use of concepts and theories from the class to support your strategy. c) Grammar, Syntax, and Mechanics: Ensure your reaction is organized well and free of grammatical and spelling errors. d) Application: Apply your communication strategies competently.
