REFLECTIVE
WRITING: DIEP
Reflective
writing can be included in a variety of different assignment tasks. It can
include keeping a reflective journal or learning log with multiple entries –
particularly for professional placements – or be part of an essay or report.
Reflective writing aims to get you to think about and understand your learning
experiences. This outline is an approach to reflective writing, using a DIEP
strategy.
The DIEP strategy
The four
steps in this approach (adapted from Boud, D 1985, Reflection: Turning Experience into Learning) are to describe, interpret, evaluate and plan.
D –
Describe objectively what happened.
• Answer the question: ‘What did I
do, read, see, hear, etc?’
I –
Interpret the events.
• Consider why events happened in the way they did. Explain:
− |
what you saw and heard
|
− |
your new insights
|
− |
your connections with other learning |
− |
your feelings |
− |
your hypotheses and/or
conclusions |
•
Answer the question: ‘what might
this mean?’
E –
Evaluate the effectiveness and usefulness of the experience
• Make judgements that are clearly
connected to observations you have made. Answer the questions:
− What is my opinion about this
experience?
− What is the value of this
experience?
− Why do I think this?
P – Plan
how this information will be useful to you.
•
Consider: In what ways might this
learning experience serve me in my:
− course
− program
− future career
− life generally
•
Answer the question: ‘How will I
transfer or apply my new knowledge and insights in the future?’

Week 2: sharing group responsibility
Upon
receiving the group task, we held a group discussion to distribute the task
among ourselves. The entire task was shared among five members who formed the
whole team. One of our group members was assigned a leading role to help to
distribute ask among all members. All the members remained calm during
responsibility sharing, and each member agreed to tackle a portion of the task
he/she was assigned. After each group member got a fair share of
responsibility, we agreed on the frequency with which we would be meeting to
evaluate each member’s progress and set a final deadline for compiling the
report. I felt that sharing responsibility among members was fair because it
was done in an open forum allowing each member to air their views. Besides,
none of the members raised issue after the sharing of responsibilities. I was
assigned to tackle four parts of the group task: marketing analysis,
environmental analysis, and company analysis and control procedures. I
was contented with tackling such tasks exhaustively. Finally, after every
member had got his or her portion of execution, we further held a general
discussion in which we reviewed all the topics comprising our group work to
ensure that every person understands his/her role and the content required.
Besides, we planned to hold a group discussion every Friday after classes
before we departure for home. The weekly discussion was aimed at each member's
burning issues with regard to our report work.
Week 3: developing a plan
In
the third week I went through my allocated task portion and distributed
throughout the allotted period, after which we were supposed to meet to compile
the progressive report. In my task, I planned much of the work to be done in
the early days to avoid last minute rush. I set my primary task objective in
delivering excellent work before deadline. Besides, I had short term milestone,
which involved the evaluation of performance after completing each task
segments to determine whether I have delivered the desired work within my
planned timeframe or not. Whenever I identified some mistakes, I would work it
out before proceeding to the task segment. For instance, in my first phase, I
worked on environment analysis, but after completing I realized I had not
captured legal factors in my report, hence I had to fine-tune that bit before
proceeding to market analysis which was my nest task portion. On the same note, I would gather the
problematic parts of my task over the week and presented them to the group
members on each Friday for discussion in our weakly meeting.
I
maintained the quality of work by basing my argument on facts rather than
opinion. I obtained my data from most recent and peer-reviewed sources to
ensure the authenticity of the information given in my report. I referenced
every source I obtained by data immediately to ensure that each information in
my report matches its source perfectly. After completing a task portion I a
proofread it to check for a grammatical error before I forget what the sections
were arguing about. I kept revising the tutor's instructions to ensure I am
working within the study's scope, and I do not deliver too little or too much
content than it is required.
The
report's development was so tasking to me since I had to balance it with my
home chores and other school duties. To ensure a smooth flow of my activities,
I devised a timetable that allotted two hours every weekday to my report's
research. To manage my report, I was forced to chop a large portion of my
leisure time and assigned it to my report's research. Besides, I never assumed
the value of every minute and thus any free time I got I invested it into
performing one or two things regarding my report. Lack enough, I did not have
to attend classes during the weekend, so I devoted most of my weekend working
on my report.
Week 4: turning in a progress report
After working on my report continuously for about two weeks, I met the other team members on week four to evaluate our progress in the report to identify where we have deviated from the requirements. In progress report turning...
