My dominant narrative of interest
is the American Dream. This concept has long been part of American culture and
history, serving as an emblematic feature of its society and culture. The
American Dream promotes hard work as the key to success and upward social
mobility, inspiring generations of Americans to pursue their dreams through
hard work alone and realize success. Meritocracy supports this view that
success comes through hard work rather than inherited wealth or social status.
However, the American Dream narrative also has its limitations. Although
inspiring many Americans to achieve great things, the American Dream narrative
has also been used to justify social and economic inequality. Although its
central concept entails equal opportunities for success regardless of race,
ethnicity, gender, or socio-economic background – unfortunately, this is often
not true: many groups, such as people of color, immigrants, and low-income
individuals, face systemic discrimination that limits education access and job
opportunities as well as poverty that prevent their progress toward reaching it
- often contributing to further inequality while leaving many behind in its
wake.
