Purpose: For this assignment, you will be able to understand the following: 1) Expectations of public art 2) Various types of public art 2) The process of making public art and it's many complications Directions: Public art is always a topic for debate. It is impossible to please everyone, especially when dealing with works of art. Many public artworks fulfill a specific role in the community; whether that role is to glorify a leader, celebrate a victory, educate the view about history or provide notoriety and therefore promote tourism. Typically, public artwork is selected by a committee of artists and city officials and is commissioned using funds from the city's budget. After watching the videos and reading the articles listed above, consider what you think the role of public art should be. Should it challenge the public or perhaps provide an escape from the everyday. Do you think it is appropriate to remove/censor works of art that many find inappropriate? Do you find any of the works of art in the required watching/reading material offensive? Why or why not? What do you think should be the appropriate process for commissioning public works of art? Should the community decide or a selected group of people? How much of the city's budget should be spend on public art? Should there be a requirement for subject matter? What public artworks do you encounter in Ft. Worth and do you think they are effective with expressing the values of the community?
