Protestant And Counter-Reformation
The church was one until in
1517 when Martin Luther published 95 theses while reacting against the abuse in
the sale of indulgences by the catholic church; this is the rise of
Protestantism (Placher). Also, the reformation of the church was also a
result of episcopal vacancies and simony. The reforms saw the rise of the
Lutheran, reformed, and Anglican. Then there is the response of the catholic to
the protestant reformation, Catholic Reformation, or counter-reformation. The
counter-reformation resulted in the reassertion of the traditional doctrines
and the rise of new religious orders for both new missionary activity and moral
reform. This paper discusses the relationship between the protestant
reformation and the catholic reformation.
The emphasis of the counter-argument
was on structural and administrative reforms than it was the case for the
protestant reformation. The counter-reformation also ignored theological issues
laying at the heart of the reformers' concerns. The counter-reformation has in
its nature become a reactionary movement. The counter-reformation was actually
the steps initiated by the catholic church to curtail the growth of
Protestantism in the 16th century; this means that the reformation was
not as original as the protestant reformation (Reinhard, 391). The counter-reformation was a committed
venture by the reform-minded Catholics aimed at fighting superstition and
arrogance, similarly to the protestant reforms, which were too fighting the
vice of indigence and corruption from the church. These two suggest that the
reformation were as a result of deviation from doing the right according to the
original virtues. The counter-reformation
and the protestant reformation took place relatively during the same time; the
reforms were all initiated a short while after the nailing of the 95 theses to
the th castle church door.
The counter-reformation aimed
at solidifying a doctrine opposed to then by the protestants, like the
authority of the pope, the elimination of abuses and problems that had formed
the basis for the inspiration of the reformation, and the veneration of saints
