INSTRUCTIONS:
In this activity, you will watch a brief video exploring where consumer goods come from and end up, then answer questions about the environmental impact of this system, and consider what sociological theory can offer in terms of explanations and potential solutions. This 2007 video about the lifecycle of consumer products was an instant sensation in YouTube’s early days. The producer, Annie Leonard, provides a sharp critique of our production and consumption system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GorqroigqM&feature=emb_logo Respond to the questions below, paying particular attention to the later questions regarding sociological theory and analysis. Your mini-paper should be formatted as a typical essay or research paper; use the questions as a guide to help structure your paper, but do not simply make a list of your responses. What is the linear production-consumption system? In Leonard’s view, what is the relationship between corporations and the government? How does that matter to the environment? What are some marketing and design strategies that exacerbate environmental degradation? Are marginalized communities represented in this video? In what way(s)? Do you agree with Leonard’s assessment? What sociological theories or perspectives might help you make your argument? For example, do you think Conflict Theorists would agree with Leonard's assessment, and if so, what additional arguments or explanations might they add to Leonard's argument?
