President Farewell and President Trump
Introduction
President Obama gave his farewell speech on January
19, 2017, and addressed the nation from his hometown of Chicago. He stressed
that the changes he made should stick and that the United States should
maintain that trajectory. President Trump conveyed his second State of the
Union address on February 5, 2019. He gave the speech during one of the tensest
moments in American politics, and defended his views on immigration. An
analysis of the two key-note discourses shows specific similarities and
differences in delivery, credibility, and connection with the audience, and that
Obama’s main message carried more weight because of his support for change.
Delivery
During their address, both leaders used a teleprompter
that allowed them to read their prepared transcribed speeches word-for-word.
This form of discourse delivery let both Trump and Obama read what they had
impeccably planned to share with their listeners. However, annotated-speech
analysts faulted the use of manuscript reading because it limited the
persuasive skills of President Obama, and affected his casual conveyance elegance.
For example, given he was a known storyteller in his farewell speech he told no
story. In contrast, the use of teleprompter enabled Trump to provide one of his
best public addresses. The most significant benefit of this form of delivery
was that it supported the use of critical and elegant language.
Credibility
Throughout the speeches, both leaders enhanced their credibility levels, as Obama emphasized the importance of change while Trump highlighted the significance of immigration policies. All of these boosted their likeability before their supporters because they spoke about the relatable fundamental issues. For example, President Obama’s objective was to get the people to support the work he had initiated. As a result, he spoke about multiple issues that were relevant to his audience and encouraged people to listen to the view of the opposing sides.
