Reflection Paper
Community engagement is an essential way
of keeping in touch with the society, within our vicinity, or even far,
depending on the needs that a program wants to achieve. While there exist
serval community engagement practices, such
as teaching people about something important like the need for a proper diet
and prevention of diseases, there are those practices which do not necessarily
require experts. Such that, any person can easily take part in community
engagement and have an impact on the people. To me, the most crucial community
engagement that one can engage in helping the needy. At one point in our lives,
we feel the need to seek for help, but the people we cry out for may not be
willing to help us. That is why, during this course, my boss and I devoted to
assisting people by distributing clothes and preparing feasts for people in
Matamoros region.
When
I started to study in this institution, I always wanted to take part in
changing people's lives, or at least making someone smile even if it was just for
a day. I cannot explain the happiness I felt when we started this course on
community engagement. I thought that I had an opportunity to understand better
about giving back to the community and at the same time, being able to
correlate well with people; I was correct. Our main objective of taking an
active part in the community engagement was to empower people by allowing them
to access clothes, which would, otherwise, be hard given the history and the
economic situation of the region that we toured.
It was on a chilly morning when my boss picked me at a petrol station near my home as we had planned. It was the beginning of a journey to a "not very safe" neighborhood.
