Politics of Human Rights

INSTRUCTIONS:

This term paper requires demonstration of your understanding of the politics of human rights. There are three options for completing the term paper assignment for this class. Option A: Choose one of the following questions and answer it in an essay format: 1. In what way(s) do Universalist and Relativist debates on human rights represent historical and contemporary political battles in theory and practice? 2. Discuss how the politics of human rights contributes to the priority given to civil and political rights over social and economic rights? 3. Using a politics of human rights framework or lens, explore reasons for the delayed actualization of collective and/or group rights across the globe or in at least one country? Option B: Through a critical analysis of any historical or contemporary human right issue of your choice, discuss how the politics of human rights has shaped/influenced or continues to shape/influence the design, implementation, and debates of the chosen human right issue? Option C (requires approval by the Professor): If you have any topic or idea you would like to write about and explore based on your personal and academic interests, you are encouraged to approach the professor and discuss the possibility of writing a paper about the topic or idea. Note: The topic or idea must be relevant to Human Rights and the paper must demonstrate a clear connection to Human Rights. Paper format: 8-10 pages for third year students, 12-15 pages for fourth year students, excluding title and bibliographical pages; Times New Roman (12 font); Double spaced. Expectation and Rubric: Your paper should contain a clear thesis statement that articulates the argument of the paper. There should be a clear structure to organize the paper. Critical analysis and reflection using evidence from at least 5 academic sources (journal articles, books, etc.) is required. To buttress your argument, you should endeavor to acknowledge and respond to potential counterarguments. Your essay should be well written in plain and understandable language, taking into consideration sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, consistent citation style, and spelling errors.
