INSTRUCTIONS:
Many nurses do not want to be involved in politics or policymaking The reality is that a successful nurse leader must understand the role of politics. The reading this week provides a historical viewpoint on policy and politics in nursing, with examples of how nurse leaders of the past have used alliances, politics and policy making to advance the cause of the profession and improve healthcare. Discussion: Consider your current work environment. What types of alliances exist? What alliances do you need to cultivate to affect change in your practice? Review the literature regarding alliances in including interdisciplinary alliance. Does cultivating cross-disciplinary alliances offer any benefits? What issues exist with these alliances? What are some strategies to overcome these challenges?
