1.0  Introduction

Industrial placement enables undergraduates to work and gain professional development. Different organizations offer attachment services to apprentice students to extend their work experience either on a paid or unpaid basis. Majority of degree course requires that students enroll for industrial attachment as part of the course work. Usually, a placement program runs for a year and acts as the third year of a four-year degree program. During my fieldwork, committed at Challenger Motor Freight as a truck dispatcher I gained the following experience; coordinated the delivery of cargo, processed orders, managed fleet drivers concerns, monitored drivers’ progress and filed paperwork.

2.0 Description and Context of Placement

2.1 Key Facts about the Organization 

Challenger Motor Freight is a Canadian privately owned transportation and logistics entity based in Cambridge, Ontario. Dan Einwechter independently founded the company in 1975, and by the 1980s, it had grown its fleet to over 60 trucks and received the most significant grant of operating authority (Challenger, 2019). It opened its main Quebec terminal in Montreal and became the first carrier to utilize the two-way satellite tracking system. Today, using a culture of innovation, Challenger experiences a steady growth because it strives and surpasses its standards of quality and performance. It adopts technological and operational advancements which allow the company to meet customers' changing needs and impact the transportation industry. Through a variety of distribution, warehousing, logistics and transportation services, Challenger maintains its North America and international market. 

The company boosts its standing because it emphasizes just-in-time delivery for hazardous, temperature controlled, expedited and LTL goods. The timely delivery relies on the use of various security trans-border custom programs, such as FAST, PIP and, C-TPAT. All of these ensure that Challenger is ISO 9001:2008 certified. Also, it sustains one of Canada largest fleets with about 1,600 power units and more than 3,200 logistics trailers. According to Challenger (2019), to maintain business across different divisions, the company has more than 100 waste haul trailers, about 350 flatbeds, and other modified trailers. Also, in its fleet, it has more than 200 specialized containers that can handle two twenty feet containers on a long-term rental basis (Gill & McDonald, 2013). The fleet operations incorporate intermodal road services that guarantee the proper use of equipment, energy and best drivers, which save on time.

Challenger positions its terminals and warehouse spaces strategically to expedite and support timely delivery of customer freights. The company fits NATAP and AVION programs in its fleet to enable drivers to transmit information through the use of transponders for pre-clearance at border crossings (Gill & McDonald, 2013). It prioritizes the needs of its employees because the transportation industry relies on people. For that reason, the management emphasizes significance of the public in its corporate culture (Challenger, 2019). The enterprise commits itself to sustainable growth, guided by values of socio-environmental responsibility, quality, integrity, and safety. To become a market leader, Challenger aligns its operations with the evolving demands of its customers. The company prioritizes customer needs and provides quality services using innovative practices. Operational and technological advancements support the timely delivery of freight and foster customer satisfaction.

 

 

2.2 Role within the Organization

2.2.1 Dispatch Department

Dispatch is the decision to assign the pickup and delivery of cargo. In the trucking industry, the dispatch department releases orders that initiate transport activities. At Challenger, this section provides orders and necessary instructions on pre-planned rosters and system of operations based on loading schedules and cargo routes. According to Challenger (2019), this division emphasizes activities, determines the drivers' duty rosters and processes pending orders. Some of the primary roles of this department include:

a)      Ascertain the availability of trucks and drivers.

b)      Supervise the movement of freight from pickup point to delivery location.

c)      Provide fleet drivers with all the required documents and certificates.
