What is something, one thing, that you think has an opportunity to be improved upon at TX State? Avoid the "no duh" topics of Parking, Tuition, Textbook Costs, and begin to critically think of a topic that can be easily and conveniently implemented to enact change. Your topic of choice is an individual decision as this is an individual project.

Prepare a one-page, single-spaced memo to the executive/administrator who would be responsible for implementing your recommendation. 

Do not address your memo to the President of the University.

Utilize appropriate memo writing techniques and formats from the textbook and lecture notes. You might approach this memo as follows:

  • Determine which executive/administrator should receive your memo (not Dr. Trauth) and review his or her profile through university web pages, organization chart, LinkedIn, etc. 
  • Tailor your memo to what you know about this person and to the department or service area. This will require research on your part to learn more about the topic and the person in charge of processing the pitch request. 
  • The pitch should be based on research, critical thinking, and practicality.
  • Include information about what another university or organization is doing regarding an idea similar to or the same as yours. This provides context and direction. (If you want to pitch a vegetarian restaurant option near Panda Express, find and research what another organization/university, etc. is doing regarding this issue)
  • Do some preliminary research to show that your idea meets the evaluation criteria below:
    • Return on Investment: Is it worth doing?
    • Feasibility: Can the idea be implemented in 2-3 semesters and will it work?
    • Stakeholders: Who might be impacted by the implementation of the pitch?
    • Manageable Obstacles or Challenges: What are the costs and potential downsides?

As the admission dates near, many people are concerned about the future of black students' admission in the institution. There has in recent years been an improvement in the number of black students and other minority groups in the university. However, the number is not the stakeholders' expectations or the capacity that the school can hold. There is still room for admitting and graduating more black and minority students. There has been a high number of applicants, but these successful students remain low. One of the disincentives to the success of the applicants is the lack of financial aid that is present in several other universities for this special group. For the university to achieve a substantial number of black and minority group students' enrollment, many of the students from middle and low-income families have to be provided with a financial aid program similar to the other competing universities within Texas. Financial aiding is a very effective tool towards ensuring the black students are enrolled in great statistics.

The university should also seek to increase the representation of the Black Faculty within the university. An outstanding program has worked in other institutions that can be instrumental in solving the puzzle of the lack of black faculty in the different fields of study. Mellon Mays, The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) is a critical program that can in the long-term cure the issues of underrepresentation in the faculty positions of tertiary education levels. It is under the dispensation of the university to make sure that they have a cohort of faculty of the black population.

Another problem could be solved to bring on board inclusivity in the university. There should be the recruitment and the return of people of color at the university at different levels. This could be important for the university in the future as it will attract many students to the university following the anticipation of inclusivity and tolerance to diversity.
