Personality Traits and Social Media Addiction

Personality is an individual’s characteristics, attitude, mindset, and behavior towards others (Diener & Lucas, 2019). The personality of individuals is dynamic that is subject to changes because of different exposure and age. The personality of an individual grows to positivity or negative development. Personality development is the process in which the personality of an individual is enhanced. Personality can be broadly classified into five different major traits; the five classifications are called the “Big Five” factors or dimensions of personality. The five personality dimension is referred to as the Five-Factor Model (FFM).  The behavior of individuals and their response to changes is determined or explained by either of these traits. The traits of individuals include openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion and introversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These traits influence people’s consumption and addiction to social media, similar to how individuals are addicted to drug use.  This paper discusses how these personality traits influence individuals’ use of social media.

Such people love to party, go out, meet others, and easily get bored when alone.  Introversion contrary include individuals who love being alone and do not like the company of others.

Secondly, there is a trait of agreeableness in which individuals possessing this trait adjust in all situations. These people accommodate themselves in all situations and are mostly kind, friendly, and easily convincible.  Another significant trait is neuroticism. Neurotic individuals are disposed to anger, anxiety, envy, and guilt, among other negative perceptions (Diener & Lucas, 2019). These individuals experience states of depression and do not enjoy life. The life perceptions of such people are oriented on the negative side, and they do not cope easily with stress.

Additionally, there are other individuals with a trait of openness to experience. Open individuals are very active and have a certain inclination to creativity, aesthetics and listen to their inner feelings. These people welcome new experiences, new skills, and new learnings. People who are open to experience are generally open-minded and easily adapt to changes and embrace them. The opposite of these individuals are those who are very conservative, have a traditional approach to life, and very reluctant to changes.

According to cognitive explanation theory, social media...
