INSTRUCTIONS:

Assignment 3         You will be graded on the quality of your answer, logical order to your answer, critical thinking, and clarity of your work.  Please remember that you are being graded on how well you can apply class material (sociology class).  Please keep in mind you are not defending your personal beliefs, you can only be graded on how well you understood course material.  Therefore, the book must be your main reference Number and restate each question that is answered.  Content is extremely important.  Do not write simple sentences to meet the minimum requirement.  If you want to assure that you receive a 100 on your assignments write more than the minimum requirement.  Also please make sure that all your answers are numbered and that all margins are consistent.  Please be mindful of your spelling and grammar (use spell check). Also, when writing your answers, please try to leave your personal biases and value judgments out. You may use examples from everyday life to support the information you provide from the textbook.  Be mindful that there are various perspectives to topics covered in class.  It is helpful to quote the textbook or you may provide additional information from another source in your answer.  When you do you must cite your work (APA is preferred). Writing the bare minimum is never enough for full credit. I need to see that you not only read and understood the material, but also that you can use apply said information critically.  On the assignments please number your answers to coincide with the questions, also, please separate the chapters. This makes it easier for me to grade.  Give a lot of details and examples in your answers.  One, two, or three sentence answers will not be given credit.  Additionally, short answers will receive a grade that corresponds with your effort.  You must write at least one paragraph per question to receive credit (Approximately 4 to 5 sentences per question).  Do not provide answers in an outline format.  DO NOT OUTLINE YOUR ANSWERS.  Good Luck.  Chapter 8 1.     A controversial question concerns the right to have a child.  Should all persons be granted the right to have a child?  Are there some categories of people who should not be allowed to have children?  Why or why not?  2.     How would a functionalist view pronatalism?  How would a conflict theorist view pronatalism?   Chapter 9 1.     Which theory is most useful for explaining childhood development and why?  2.     If grandparents are acceptable caregivers, then why should we object to older women and men who want to have children? Chapter 10   1.    Ask students to discuss why the economy plays such an important role in family life.  Be sure to discuss family and work policies as well as such factors as wages and the cost of living. 2. Ask students to discuss work-family stress and ways to cope with the stress.  How much of this stress should be the responsibility of the family?  How much should be the responsibility of employers?   Chapter 11 1.     Do families today experience higher levels of stress than in the past? If so, why should this be the case? 2.     Do employers have a responsibility to work to prevent family violence? Would they benefit directly or indirectly if they were proactively involved in reducing family violence?
