PART I

Personal values refer to an individual’s code of conduct. While professional values can be defined as a code of conduct set by an authoritative body in an association. According to Barnard et al. (2008), values describe what a person regards to be valuable. The similarity between personal and professional values is that both are bound to be affected by the change as a person develops through life experience, political knowledge, and community influences and so on. For instance, most of the individuals tend to modify the way they relate to others as they grow to get promotions at work. There is a notable difference between personal and professional values highlighted by how an individual conducts him/herself both at work and at home, for example, an individual will treat a coworker and a spouse differently. To further add on that, personal values regarding accountability affect only a person while on the other hand in professional values the whole organization is affected.

Professional relationships refer to how an individual interact at work while observing set boundaries that are deemed proper. On the other hand, personal relationships can be defined as the way a person interact with friends, family members communicate.  Despite workers maintaining a professional relationship, a personal relationship may also find its way in a professional environment, employees may get personally attached to each other, and for example, employees get to marry each other.  Personal relationships are similar to professional relationships as both incorporate changes with time. For example, individuals adopt efficient modes of communication both at work and at home. Additionally, a professional relationship can be experienced in an organizational setup where employees are subordinate to protocols within the workplace. Employees are bound by a code of conduct and ethics to ensure high levels of professionalism. To state the differences, the professional relationship involves the behavior at work that is regulated by professional standards, for example, individuals abide by the code of ethics. Conversely, the behavior in a personal relationship is controlled by personal values and attributes. Consequently, in regards to health care personal relationship is unstructured, while the professional relationship is structured, for example, a nurse will only give care to a client based on well-set structures within the organization.

Through extensive research, it is evident that people create first impressions in regards to others based on what they can observe, for instance, culture, gender, and race connection (Brickson, 2002). The mentioned characteristics have been discussed below:

Similarity and difference in gender have attracted a lot of interest as a study point about the impact on a professional relationship. Academicians have argued that both clients and social workers feel unease in cross-gender relationships because of how they perceive issues like sexuality, harassment among others that frequently characterize this kind of relationships (Hurley & Fagenson-Eland, 1996).

Gender similarity and difference from both client and social workers point of view have varied effects on the relationship with the clients.
