Do
you agree with the authors’ assertion that participation is the most fundamental
of the basic distinctions of art? Why? If you disagree, which do you think is
the most important and why? Do you have any experiences with art to draw on to
support your claims?
I agree with the author's assertion that participation
is a fundamental art distinction, as highlighted by the argument in Lee A:
Jacobus and F. David Martin's write-up. In art, participation is described as a
form that directly engages the participant in the whole process of creation so
that they become valid and active participants in the entire event (Jacobus
& Martin, 2019). Participation is an essential fundamental art distinction,
like content creation, subject matter, and art.
Participation enhances the artist's level of interaction, is flexible in redefining a piece of art, and tends to be complete with physical interaction. To some extent, participatory art requires the audience to recede far enough to be equal to the participants. There are diverse degrees of participation, from little manipulation of an object, such as sculptures and costumes, which resemble the artist's body, to the audience's whims (Jacobus & Martin, 2019). There is a social practice where the works of the artist, the audience, and the interaction between them where both parties are the medium. On the other hand, the painter may use pigments or canvas and other sculptures, and the audience is invited to participate.
