Pan′s Labyrinth is in the genre of magical realism and takes place in Spain after the Spanish Civil War. The moral of the film is a subversive one on the importance of thinking about oneself, but again, it also promotes disobedience to authority. Hence the film has a significant inclination towards fascism, mainly because it was based on the period succeeding the Civil War. The film raises two key ideas of time; first, the historical time, and the second, the millennial's time. These two ideas come together to indicate a transition of the generation to the new era in the real and imaginary world.

The ending of the movie interlinks the events of the Spanish Civil War with the magical elements in which the girl participates in that it is the only point in the film where characters affiliated with realism come close to Ofelia’s interaction with fantastical creatures.
