Othello’s Character Traits Different from others in the Play

Othello is a tragic play written by William Shakespeare. The main protagonist in the play is Othello, alongside other main characters like Iago, Desdemona, Cassio, and others. Shakespeare presents Othello as an honorable, respectable, and dignified man. Othello has feelings of insecurity and good nature, which is the reason why he is taken advantage of, and his peers and alleged allies manage to take advantage of him. The character of Othello remains dynamic throughout the play. At the begging of the play, the character of Othello is that of being peaceful and calm but towards the end of the play, he turns venomous, and this plays to his downfall. The downfall of Othello can be attributed to love, jealousy, and insecurity. Othello’s love for Desdemona contributes to his tragedies; he is so loving that he does not comprehend how Desdemona could be a cheat. Othello is convinced by Iago, and upon finding the handkerchief, he gave to his wife as his first gift to her in Cassio’s place makes him believe the words of Iago.  Ironically his extreme love for Desdemona makes him concerned about her and the point that he is black among many whites; he feels insecure, and he eventually kills his wife, contributing to his downfall.

Othello is brave. At the beginning of the play, Othello is a brave warrior who the Venice leaders think will defend them against the Turkish enemy. Duke and the others leaders feel that Othello is the right deal for them to see victory against the Turkey enemy. Among the plot, Othello is an outsider but a very brave warrior and later a general. Othello leads several victories. The reason why Desdemona falls in love with Othello is that she learns that he is very brave. And the consequence of this bravery culminates in eloping and deep love for themselves. Desdemona, the senator’s daughter, appreciates the bravery of Othello and accepts to marry him. Another bravery shown by Othello, though shown in a destructive way, is the decision to terminate their own life. Othello learns that the plans by Iago were unscrupulous and he feels offended that he has ruined his own marriage. He falls prey to Iago’s plan and struggles his life to death with a pillow. Othello feels that he has done his own betrayal and, out of ignorance, killed his wife.  Othello is brave enough to punish himself by committing suicide as vengeance for his own mistakes.
