INSTRUCTIONS:
Please write a 3-4 page exegesis of “Ode on a Grecian Urn.” Your explication should be written in essay format, and thus should include a thesis statement, an introduction, body, and conclusion, and should follow all other conventions of the argument-oriented essay. In addition, please don’t forget to address the standard questions we have discussed in class, such as (1) Who is the speaker of the poem? (15 points) (2) What is the occasion of the poem? (15 points); (3) What is the dramatic situation? (15 points), and (4) What is an important theme of the poem? (stated in your thesis) (20 points). In answering these basic questions, you should also provide a basic paraphrase of the poem as well. Once you have adequately addressed these basic questions, then proceed to addressing the poetic “devices” and/or other considerations as have been discussed in your readings up to this point, namely, “denotation,” “connotation,” and the seven types of imagery we have reviewed in class (visual, olfactory, gustatory, auditory, tactile, organic, and kinesthetic). You may also refer to devices such as simile, metaphor, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, personification, apostrophe, allegory, paradox, overstatement, understatement, irony (any of the three types discussed in your book), sarcasm, satire, and allusion. Also remember to be sure not only to correctly identify each example of your chosen poetic device in the poem (1 point), but to also argue how that device contributes to the overall sense and/or theme of the poem (up to 3 points) . YOU MAY ONLY REFER TO THE USE OF EACH DEVICE ONLY ONCE IN THE ESSAY. Essays must be typed, double-spaced, and follow the standard conventions of the MLA style sheet.
