1.0 Introduction

Definition

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be easily described as an anxiety disorder. In principle, the mental condition can be explained and analyzed in reference to various aspects such as, compulsions and obsessions. As such, obsessions can be termed as doubts, urges, images or unwelcomed thoughts that consistently appear in an individual's mind, for instance experiencing an increasingly sudden urge to hurt someone. According to Murphy et al. (2013), these obsessions can be described as horrible thus forcing individuals not to share them with others as often the obsessions get to interrupt the flow of thoughts thus resulting in a person developing the state of anxiety. On the other hand, compulsions can be described as the repetitive activities that individuals feel they have to do. For instance, this could be depicted by a person always checking under the bed so that to ensure there is no one other person in the room. Lovell et al. (2006) explain that compulsion aims at realizing a way that can guarantee distress resulting from obsessive thoughts is well dealt with so that anxiety levels are relieved. Nonetheless, the process that an individual is constantly going through compulsion is upsetting in itself complemented by the person feeling relief albeit the feeling is short lived.

2.0 Facts about OCD

Origin

Choate-Summers et al. (2008) assert that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often masked in anonymity, as individuals suffering from the disorder struggle to understand the origin of their disorder. Primarily, most of the sufferers tend to over-think as they often believe that if an individual can understand the conditions that affected their brain, then it is also possible to figure out the origin of the state. And so, Ursu et al. (2003), implies that it is vital to recognize that persons diagnosed with OCD are characterized by the tendency to spend a lot of time thinking so that to know the origin of the problem. In consequence, most of the people will reveal that they believe their condition can be attributed to a particular life event such as abuse of drugs, traumatic events, etc.
