Obama Hope Case Study - Artistic Expression

Citizens have used several strategies to express their grievances to the government to persuade their equal rights as citizens. Some people convey oppression through songs, while protest through non-violent social movements is the most commonly used strategy to persuade the government to grant citizens certain rights. The effectiveness of a certain political movement is affirmed by the image used during the non-violent demonstration. "We Shall Overcome" is one of the images used in most social movements across the globe by social movements to convey a message of oppression to the government. The phrase "we shall overcome' originated from a hope song  (Varner 2021) sung by gospel singer Joan Baez in 1963.
