I think the essential knowledge I consumed outside class reading materials is when I watched the “Price of Sugar Documentary.” The film was about the deplorable condition that sugar plantations Haitian workers live in. I learned that various parts of the world are faced with different challenges, mainly due to poor governance. For example, the Haitians working in sugarcane plantation cannot access healthcare services, live in temporary houses, and under minimum wages. I also learned that some products that we use on our daily basis, such as sugar, have a very long history because some people may be suffering when producing those commodities. This knowledge is vital because now I know despite the many years of civilization, some parts of the world are still lagging on matters of people's rights, minimum wages, and human trafficking. This knowledge stuck in my mind because I always thought all parts of the world are just like my country, where human rights are key; that is why I cannot forget what I learned.
