Nonverbal Communication Observational

INSTRUCTIONS:

Nonverbal Communication, you can choose any space in your home, a friend or family's home, or work to document. The key is that you choose someone’s other than your own. You may choose to document the nonverbal communication in the kitchen, a family member's bedroom, an office, the basement or garage, etc. It is up to you to decide. The goal of the assignment this week is to observe the space focusing on nonverbal and hopefully, seeing personal artifacts or environmental design choices that you never thought too much about. Now, it is time to think about the meaning that is being conveyed in these choices and what it says about the person who inhabits this space most. Complete the numbered steps, answering the questions, after reading the chapter. Include pictures of the space to document the exercise. Choose a space to observe for nonverbal communication: proximity (use of space- clutter/ cleanliness), environment (color, sound, smell), and artifacts (items and belongings). Create a list of nonverbal communication examples. What do you think the meaning is in the communication examples? How does it help you learn more or understand the person better? Why did they make these decisions? What is the significance or value of their belongings? As you learned in this course, culture and gender have a big impact on the way we communicate. What are some of the culture and gender influences you can observe? Perception influences every aspect of communication. Explain how your perceptions of the person and your relationship likely affect your reading of the person. What is something new that became apparent after completing the exercise?
