Non-Experimental Research

INSTRUCTIONS:

assignment  DB 7 Suppose that you, a researcher, want to better understand why the recidivism rate (the tendency of a convicted criminal to reoffend) is so high in the United States. Describe a non-experimental design addressing this issue. Make sure to address who the participants would be and how you'd recruit them, what the design of the study would be, and how you'd carry this study out. Discuss why you chose to design the study as you did (provide details) and discuss any issues you foresee with your design in terms of internal and external validity and recruitment. Module 4a Overview As discussed with the last module, there are key features that define an experiment; other studies that do not have these features, fall into the non-experimental or quasi-experimental categories. This module, we'll look at non-experimental research and discuss when it's advantageous to use these designs. We'll also discuss the data collection and analyses processes for some of these designs in addition to issues of validity. Finally, we'll learn about the strengths and weaknesses of this type of research. Please make sure to review all resources in the folder, and complete the readings, before completing the discussion board. Learning Outcomes: Define non-experimental research, distinguish it clearly from experimental research, and give several examples. Explain when a researcher might choose to conduct non-experimental research as opposed to experimental research. Define correlational research and give several examples. Explain why a researcher might choose to conduct correlational research rather than experimental research or another type of non-experimental research. Interpret the strength and direction of different correlation coefficients. Explain why correlation does not imply causation. List several ways in which qualitative research differs from quantitative research. Describe the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research compared with quantitative research. Give examples of qualitative research. List the various types of observational research methods and distinguish between each. Describe the strengths and weakness of each observational research method.  Readings and Assignments Read/Watch/Listen: RM in Psychology textbook - Chapter 6 (skip section 6.3) Positive and Negative Correlations (1:58) Assignments: DB 7: original post by Due Date 1; responses by Due Date 2
