INSTRUCTIONS:
“Were going to have to control your tongue, the dentist says, pulling out all the metal from my mouth” (1558). Why is this story at the beginning significant? Why do you think her mother was mortified that she spoke English like a Mexican? (1559) “Often with Mexicanas y Latinas, we’ll speak English at parties as a neutral language” (1563). Why is English a neutral language, and do you agree with Anzaldua? On page 1560, Anzaldua mentions eight different languages she speaks. Do you think it is less acceptable for people to speak more than one language in the United States? “At Pan American University, I, and all Chicano students were required to take two speech classes. Their purpose: to get rid of our accents” (1559). Can society take away part of your cultural identity? “If you want to be American, speak ‘American.’ If you don’t like it, go back to Mexico where you belong.” (1559) How do you think this teacher's reaction affected her identity? Why do you think Anzaldua inserts multiple quotes throughout the story? What does Anzaldua mean by, “I will have my serpent’s tongue?” (1563) “But for a language to remain alive it must be used. By the end of this century English, and not Spanish, will be the mother tongue of most Chicanos and Latinos.” (1563) What is the importance of language in cultures? Why do you think Anzaldua incorporated Spanish passages throughout the story? How did this affect you as the reader?
