Must the President Be a Moral Leader?
The question of whether a president should be a moral leader or
not has been raised severally but always received mixed reactions from scholars
and political activists. Some people argue that being a good president, one
must be a moral leader, while other objects that notion claiming that being a
moral leader and status in leadership are two different accounts. This paper will
disagree with the claim that president must be a moral leader because president’s
main call is to protect his/her country and people.
First, the president is surrounded by hostile people who
sometimes need to be rebuked and humiliated to conform to the country's rules.
Some politicians for example, tend to use public property for personal gain. President
has the power to fire such people from office and sue them for misuses of
public property. Such an act may seem immoral because firing such a politician
would mean his/her family would suffer, but the outcome is positive since it
protects the public property. According to the author of Applhaum, what is
right for someone to do is determined by their kind of job. For example, a good
lawyer may have the right to humiliate or bully witnesses deemed hostile to
ensure fair evidence is given to the claim, and the culprit is judged fairly
too.
