Today,
most of the American colleges and universities are working towards establishing
strategies that can promote diversity and multiculturalism. According to Cannon
and Luckner (2016), the government acknowledges that diversity in education is
a sensitive topic. There is an increased
level of pressure at government level for institutions of learning to enhance
the standards of diversity so that to promote inclusivity. At the Higher
Achievers College through the Office of the Senior Diversity Officer, the
institution has established its mission as; “To create an environment that respects and values the background and
individualities of each person. To build an enabling and accommodating
environment that enhances learning levels.” However, the incorporation of
diversity in education is a daunting and challenging task that has attracted a
lot of controversies. It is the responsibility of High Achievers College through
the Office of the Senior Diversity Officer to promote and implement diversity
in the overall education community as well as in classrooms.
The
relevance of Mission Statement
The
Higher Achievers College recognizes that its mission is imperative to the
future of diversity within the institution. The college believes that diversity
paves the way for the development of innovative ways of challenging technical
issues and the implementation of effective teaching methods. Diversity will
enable the top management as well as the academic team to gain a broader sense
and bear in mind differences in life experiences, religious practices, sex,
gender identity, ethnicity, and so on. Wade Boykin (2014) asserts that
embracing diversity improves individual tolerance and understanding. This situation will be highlighted by the
implementation of the mission statement behind diversity so that to provide a
platform on which the college can attempt to enhance diversity results in the
creation of a conducive working and learning setting.
Diversity
measurable goals
To foster
diversity, the college will implement different quantifiable goals throughout
the university structure. Gradually, the achieved objectives will be measured
so that to determine how each goal influences the future of diversity within
the college. These goals include;
a)
Offer
employee training
The
top management strives towards offering equal employment opportunities to an
individual of all races, genders, skills, and abilities so that to enhance
productivity levels and boost employee morale. Eva (2017) opines that employees
with training tend to exhibit high loyalty and reduced friction with the
management. To determine the progress and effectiveness of employee training,
the college will conduct an objective measurement that involves comparing the
employee performance levels pre and post-training. The improved employee performance
level will indicate the effectiveness of providing employee training.
b)
Hire
based on abilities
The college will commit to hire and promote its employees based on their strengths and skills as opposed to nepotism or personality. The promotion of diversity improves the communications skills and institutional...
