Management By Objectives

INSTRUCTIONS:

This assignment is intended to address one of the major objectives for this class which is to have you reading and critically analyzing research publications in top tier I/O journals. For this assignment you must select one of the following articles. For the article you select, you will of course read it (perhaps more than once if needed) and write a short paper summarizing and reflecting on the article. Specifically, your commentary must include: The APA style citation. Summary: Summarize the purpose of the study, the study's methods, and its main findings in your own words as if you were explaining the study to your instructor, a professor, and/or your fellow classmates. Reflection: Provide thoughtful commentary on the article. Explanation for non-expert audiences: Imagine you are explaining this research and its findings to non-expert audiences (i.e., an audience that is unfamiliar with the subject matter, statistical methods, and research methods). Write a summary of the research and key take-aways in a way that a non-expert audience can understand and find value in. In your commentary, you should not ask for simple or technical clarifications (e.g., "What is an analysis of variance?") nor merely list various things you liked about the article. Rather, your commentary should thoughtfully address issues that you found interesting, relatable, confusing, exciting, or contradictory in what you have read. Again, you should not merely list such things, but explain why (e.g., why did you find that interesting/confusing/etc.). In your write up, you will be graded on adherence to these instructions as well as APA formatting, grammar, punctuation, and critical thinking. Submit your document to Webcourses as a Word document (.doc or .docx file formats). Please utilize the library for help accessing journal articles. Late submissions will not be accepted. Article Commentary 4 For this assignment you will choose one of the articles below and write a paper summarizing and reacting to the article. Submit one Word document (.doc or .docx) with the following. Greenberg, J. (1990). Employee theft as a reaction to underpayment inequity: The hidden cost of pay cuts. Journal of Applied Psychology, 75(5), 561-568. Sliter, M., Jex, S., Wolford, K., & McInnerney, J. (2010). How rude! Emotional labor as a mediator between customer incivility and employee outcomes. Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, 15(4), 468-481. Below I have listed more detailed notes regarding what your summary/reflection/explanation for non-expert audiences should address to help you get started: Summary: Describe the following in your own words: The purpose of the study. What is the current gap in the literature? Why is a new study needed? The main variables / constructs that are being studied. The study’s hypotheses and the logical and theoretical arguments that the authors use to justify their hypotheses. Why do the authors hypothesize what they hypothesize? If there are many hypotheses, try to summarize them in a few sentences. The study’s method. Who participated? How were the variables measured? The study’s main findings. In your own words, what are the important takeaways? Reflection: Provide thoughtful commentary on the article. You’re not required to answer specific questions because you will want to comment on different things. Some questions you might address include: Why are you interested or not interested in this topic? How important / relevant is the study? What about the article did you find particularly intriguing or interesting and why? How does the article relate to topics we discussed in class? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article? To what extent are the study’s findings generalizable to other contexts? What is a way you could extend the findings of this study with a study of your own? To what extent are your personal experiences consistent or not consistent with the findings? Do you agree with the authors’ conclusions and why? Explanation for non-expert audiences: Explain this study and its findings in a way that someone who does not have any expertise in the area would be able to understand. What are the key "takeaways" from the study? How can the results of the study be applied/used in the real world? The APA style citation of the article you chose. Your summary section will be graded on how well you demonstrate understanding of the article. If you use excessive quotes or make vague statements (“Biodata is data about oneself.”), it will be harder for me to determine with certainty that you have a good understanding of the content. To receive a high score, your summary should clearly describe the purpose, method, and conclusions of the article in your own words. Your reflection section will be graded on the depth of your comments. I want you to demonstrate critical thinking. If your comments are too surface-level (“I liked that the article was easy to read.”) it is difficult for me to determine that you critically thought about the article. To receive a high score, your comments should thoughtfully analyze the content of the article (“My experience with abc issue is consistent with xyz finding because…”). The more detail you provide, the better. Your explanation for non-expert audiences section will be graded on the quality of your explanation and proper understanding of audience.
