INSTRUCTIONS:
Literacy Narrative: Each student will write a reflective narrative exploring 2-3 key formative literacy sponsor related experiences with learning to read and write academically. (750-1000 words, MLA format) The writing should: use Deborah Brandt's definition of literacy sponsor to: define what a literacy sponsor is explain how your sponsor fits that definition discuss how this sponsor shaped your understanding and performance of academic literacies: identify one sponsor of your understanding of academic reading and writing discuss 2-3 experiences connecting that sponsor to academic literacy development explain how these experiences shaped that understanding of academic literacy reflect on how these experiences have prepared you for college reading and writing be a minimum of 750 words be submitted as a Word/pdf file in MLA format include a thesis statement, a sentence in the first paragraph, which predicts the organization of the essay and makes an argument on the impact this sponsor had on your academic literacy development address all the categories of the rubric Your essay should have sections that address: An introduction Introduces readers to your subject Concludes with a thesis statement that answers the question: How did your academic literacy change because of the experiences with a literacy sponsor? Literacy Sponsor Introduction to and explanation of Deborah Brandt's definition of literacy sponsor Introduction to your literacy sponsor Explanation of how your sponsor fits Brandt's definition Experiences with Sponsor (minimum of 2) A short summary of experience giving it context for readers Explanation of the sponsor's connection to experience Analysis of how each experience influenced your academic literacy Explanation of how this experience relates to the argument of your thesis statement Reflection on how these experiences have prepared you for reading and writing in college Brainstorming the Literacy Sponsor section: Will you quote or paraphrase Brandt's definition? If a paraphrase, draft it. Include your in-text citation for either one. How will you introduce the quote? Explain what the quote means, especially how it relates to the experiences you will include in your paper. What is academic literacy? How does it relate to literacy sponsors? Explain. Introduce the sponsor so that your reader has a clear picture of this sponsor and understands the context of the interactions. How does the sponsor fit Brandt's definition? Explain this using details. How are literacy sponsors important? Why is it important to understand this for the reader? Explain it. How will you transition into this section? Into the next section? Brainstorming an Experience section (for each experience): Summarize the experience How is this about academic literacy? Explain it. Identify and explain which academic literacy is involved in the experience Explain how are these experiences connected to the sponsor How was this academic literacy influenced? What was this academic literacy like before the experience? What happened during the experience? How did this academic literacy change? Brainstorming the Conclusion: How did this sponsor shape your view of academic literacy? What did the experiences contribute to this change?
