INSTRUCTIONS:
PART 1 1. Define leadership in your own words (not the text definition). Things to consider: a. What does leadership mean to you? b. How have your past leadership/role positions impacted your definition? c. Who are some leaders past or present you admire? 2. Define power as it is explained in the text, and then distinguish between positional power and personal power. Give examples of a leader or leaders you have observed using each of these forms of power. PART 2 1. Explain the two steps leaders must fulfill to be effective (Chapter 5). Apply these steps to a current situation in which you are a follower. What style would be most appropriate for leading you, according to the theory, and why? Do you agree? 2. Complete the Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire . What style do you tend to rely on most? Least? Give an example that shows how your behavior in one situation illustrated your most common leadership style. Use the text to support your example. PART 3 1. Complete the LMX 7 Questionnaire . How would you interpret the results? Provide at least 2 examples from your own experience that supports the results of this questionnaire utilizing material from the text. 2. Think of a transformational leader who has made a difference in your life. Consider someone who has motivated, inspired and expected great things from you, or changed and altered your life forever in a positive way. Using examples from the text, explain their impact on you as a transformational leader. PART 4 1. Using the concepts from Chapter 9 (authentic leadership) explain how a contemporary leader (of your choice) is an authentic leader. Use 3-5 specific examples to support your argument. 2. For your own self-awareness of authentic leadership, complete the Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire . 3. How can organizations, and not just individual leaders, become models for Servant Leadership? Is it possible to practice servant leadership in a competitive corporate climate? PART 5 1. In your current job, or role as a student, what would it mean for a leader to “give the work back to you”? How might you respond? Give examples and connect to the concepts of Adaptive Leadership. 2. Define and describe the principles of ethical leadership. Which two of the five covered in this chapter do you think are the most important? Why? 3. What are some of the reasons that work teams have become more prevalent in today’s organizations? Using your own examples with support from the text, discuss how work teams could provide a competitive advantage for organizations. PART 6 1. Now that you have had a chance to learn more about Leadership during the course, how do you now define it? Things to consider: a. What does it mean to you moving forward in your life? b. Are there any new ideas you have for how you may shape your daily work habits? c. How will you manage your current role or future roles as a leader? d. What connections to theory have shaped your insights and definition?
