Lead Poisoning

INSTRUCTIONS:

Sally has lead poisoning. As you come to the end of the visit with Sally, her mother is naturally concerned. “May I ask you a few questions?” “Of course,” you reply. Sally’s mother inquires a little bit more about Sally’s situation but then asks just how common lead poisoning is and its most common source. You detect an increase in urgency in her voice as she also inquires about lead poisoning in young children. She explains that they have a niece – her brother’s daughter – who is eight years old but who has spent a lot of time with them in the studio over the last two years, especially during the summers. Mrs. Larsen says that she thinks her niece should be tested and asks how you evaluate (young) children for exposure to lead and the specific types of tests that are used for such assessments. She also asks you what level of poisoning requires follow-up action. Finally, she wonders which drugs are used to treat lead poisoning and when they are used or not used. Action Items Please answer Mrs. Larsen’s questions. Give your rationale and substantiate them with references, including your textbook and a minimum of 3 other credible, scholarly sources.
