Issues Affecting Girlhood

"Girlhood" follows Marieme through her 16th year while she was living in a housing project. She experiences more issues compared to her peers during her social and academic life. She was affected by problems such as failing grades pushing her to transfer to a technical school and learn about trade. She was faced with challenges such as sexual abuse, undergoing through an unwanted pregnancy, being labeled as a thief, taking the role a parent since her father was absent and the mother, Binta Diop, was working. The absence of both parents exposed Marieme to her abusive brother. In a different scene, a girl tried to explain deep-rooted anxieties about hair within black communities saying that her farther used to cut her hair off as punishment taking away among the standards of beauty that give her power. Marieme seemed much younger that other girls who appeared glamour in the weaves, red lipstick, and similar gold necklaces.
