HDFS 1300 DEVELOPMENT OF CONTEMPORARY FAMILIES

Spring 2018 Edition

Examining Both Sides of a Family Policy Issue

Task:  The purpose of this paper is for you to 1) consider both sides of an argument in written form, 2) develop your professional writing skills, especially with common elements of APA Style, 3) obtain additional experience applying research studies to real-world issues, and 4) learn more about perspectives related to family policy.

Late Work:  Late papers will be penalized 10% for each day late, including weekend days.

Locating Sources:  If you need help locating sources for your paper, please utilize the tips on the UH Libraries HDFS 1300 website or contact our assigned librarian, Shawn Vaillancourt (his contact information is on the website):  http://guides.lib.uh.edu/hdfs1300

Essay Style and Organization:  You will be graded on your overall writing style and use of basic APA Style.  The criteria include appropriate use of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and overall organization.  A TA or the instructor will be happy to talk to you and provide suggestions prior to the essay due date.

·         Do not use direct quotes in this paper. A main goal of this course is to learn to paraphrase in APA Style so that you do not rely heavily on direct quotes.

·         If you struggle with writing, I highly recommend that you consider visiting the LAUNCH office on campus for tutoring:  http://www.uh.edu/ussc/launch/services/

·         Use proper paragraph organization, and use a professional tone in your writing.  Avoid colloquialisms/slang (“cool,” “my bad,” “down to earth,” “for the birds,” “wanna,” “got the idea,” “feel like,” “till,” etc.), contractions (don’t, shouldn’t, won’t, can’t, etc.), and other more casual features.

·         Do not use subheadings for different sections of your paper.  Given the relatively short length of your paper, subheadings are unnecessary and points will be deducted.

Length and Formatting:  The modified APA Style presented to you by the instructor should be used.  You are also encouraged to use the APA EasyGuide, the Purdue OWL APA resource website (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/), and the APA Style Manual, 6th Edition.

·         Your paper should be prepared in 12-point font (Times New Roman, Cambria, or Calibri), double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all four sides (top, bottom, left, and right).

·         Your paper should be a total of 5-6 pages, including the title page and reference page.  This means you should have 3-4 content pages consisting of the body of your paper (introduction to conclusion).

Plagiarism:  As stated in the syllabus, plagiarism will not be tolerated.  Be certain that you do not plagiarize materials presented in class, in any text, or online.  View the videos posted on your Blackboard website to be sure you understand how to paraphrase.  Do not simply use a thesaurus to change a few words – that constitutes plagiarism.  If you are confused about writing a definition in your own words, perhaps first describing the theory/concept to another person will help you.  Also, be sure to cite the text or class notes as appropriate.  If you are unsure if you have plagiarized work, see a TA or Dr. Jordan before the assignment is due, and we will clarify any questions you have.  However, questions submitted less than 48 hours before the due time may not be answered in time for you to submit your paper.  Instances of plagiarism after a paper has been submitted will be reported to UH administration.

Self-Plagiarism:  Self-plagiarism also will not be tolerated. You are prohibited from using work (or portions/sections of work) completed for another course (even at a different college or university) for fulfillment of this assignment. Paper 2 Writing Prompt

1.       As part of the skill of writing to learn, you will critically analyze an issue using available research before synthesizing that information to form a personal position. Throughout the course, we have discussed a number of controversial issues related to marriages and families. Few issues have been clear-cut and one-sided.  This essay provides you the opportunity to learn more about an area of interest, and it incorporates both research and opinion.  First, select one of the following issues to focus on for your paper:

·         What are the Potential Impacts of “Bathroom Bills” on Families?

·         Drug, Tobacco, or Alcohol Use During Pregnancy—Should Expectant Women be Prosecuted?

·         Is Technology More Helpful or More Harmful for Families?

In the recent years, family technology has been incorporated in families despite having both positive and negative effects. Family technology is one of the areas that have experienced a significant shift. DePietro (2013) asserts that over a decade ago, emails, blogging, and text messaging had not been adopted as methods of family communication. The globe has witnessed advances in technology, but the point of contention remains whether this surplus of technology is helpful or harmful to families.

Technology is helpful it connects families that live far away from another. Indeed, many families reside in different parts of the world; therefore, it is impossible to see each other regularly. It is even challenging for families that share the same roof since it is difficult at times to have family sit-downs and talk. Today, advancement in technology has made it easier for families to communicate, especially for those with members who live far away (Hertlein, 2012).  As a result, the improvements in technology have proved to be beneficial to families that are characterized by widely spread families or have busy schedules. Modern technology possesses various benefits that can be enjoyed by families since...
