Interpersonal Relationship
An
interpersonal relationship is an affiliation between two or more persons. It
can entail lovers, partners, co-workers, and many others who make up the social
connection in their lives (Parvez et
al., 2019). In the film 'A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper (2018)
elaborates the meaning of interpersonal relationships clearly and concisely.
The movie is about a musician, Jackson Maine, who helps a young artist Ally
Gaga to become a famous person in the American music industry. However,
although Jack helps Ally move up the ladder in her music career, he moves the
spiral downwards due to excessive alcohol consumption. Before meeting Ally,
Jackson was a famous music singer who used to play a concert in California,
America, but he was struggling with alcohol and drug addiction Bradley Cooper
(2018). Bobby, his older half-brother, was his music manager. On the flip side,
Ally was not only a hotel waitress but also a singer-writer. However, she had difficulty
pursuing her music career due to discouragement from her spectators. Before
meeting Jackson, Ally had broken up with her friend over the phone and started
having a love affair with her boss Bryan (Jacob Stick).
Jackson
met Ally in a hall where she worked as a waitress while he was taking drinks as
usual. Upon meeting, Ally disclosed to Jackson that she had challenges
advancing her music carrier because her audience claims that though she has a lovely
song, her face is ugly. He disregards the allegation and confirms to her that
she is beautiful. Jackson is amazed by Ally's performance, and they spend the
entire night talking about it. He felt so touched and encouraged and invited
her to his show to sing with her on the stage. She declines Jackson's
invitation to his performance and chooses to go to work. At work, Bryan
quarrels with her for arriving late. She got annoyed and decided to take a
flight to see Jackson in his show, where he was performing one of his hits, "Maybe
Its Time." Although she was nervous, Jackson invited her to the stage to
sign "Swallow" together, and the audience loved it. Videos of the
performance become a viral sensation. Jackson invites Ally to go on a tour with
him, and they form a romantic relationship. When they visited Arizona, where
Jackson was born and raised, he realized that Bobby, his music manager, and
half-brother, had sold the land. Jackson punches Bobby, Who subsequently ceases
to be his manager. Social exchange theory and equity theory can best explain
the romantic life of Jackson and Ally throughout the film.
Social Exchange Theory
According
to Liaquat and Mehmood (2017),
social exchange theory is a philosophy that the exchange process results in
social behavior that defines the relationship between two individuals. The
exchange focuses on minimizing the costs and maximizing the gains. The theory
asserts that before people engage in a relationship, they first weigh the
inherent benefits and risks. If the risks outweigh the gains, individuals will
abandon the relationship. In mots relationships, each party taken-and-give to
keep the relationship sound and well, but this does not mean that they give and
take in equal measures. According to the social, the social theory value of the
gains and risks of each relationship dictates whether the involved parties
would choose to continue or end the relationship.
