Quintanilla Lupe Overcame Adversity and Racism in America
Racism is at the core of many communities
in the world amidst increased efforts to embrace diversity and inclusivity. Serena
Williams is a professional tennis player in the United States and has worn over
23 Grand Slam singles titles;
these achievements have not been without a fair share of challenges. Lupe Quintanilla, on the other hand, is a
professor at the University of Houston. The way Williams and Quintanilla handled racism concede in that
they both take criticism positively; however, the prejudice faced and solved
was different in that Williams was considered as being too
‘manly,’ while Quintanilla
was considered as an academic dwarf.
Williams overcame diversity by maintaining focus on her sport career. Williams' primary challenge in interacting with people in the athletic arena was due to how people perceived her as being too manly (not fit to compete with ladies). She would do things that baffled observers and commentators. Nonetheless, much of her documented victory denotes a highly focused person who would not listen to negative attitudes and perceptions. In her understanding of what people thought about her, she believed that success was a product of effort and determination and not inclination with any community, origin, or having any particular skin color. Furthermore, William had to deal with people who thought her color disqualified her from participating in tennis tournaments with other female players. Her ways of addressing this challenge were unique because she had to prove to people that color is not a limitation. Her color and race were the main issues of contention since people thought she was not capable of participating in tennis.
