HIV Testing Must Be Routine

INSTRUCTIONS:

"Having doctors routinely offer HIV testing to all patients is a nice first step.  Just by taking it some of the last vestiges of stigma will evaporate from a diagnosis of HIV.  But we ought be moving toward requiring HIV testing before surgery, admission to college or giving birth.  It is unlikely that people would be scared away from getting healthcare or entering college by such a requirement, and there is every chance that a few more lives might well be saved as a result." From "Case 33 HIV Testing Must Be Routine",  McGee, G.  bioethics for beginners: 60 Cases and Cautions from the Moral Frontier of Healthcare. Wiley-Blackwell, John Wiley & Sons. 2012 Do you agree that colleges/universities should require all persons applying for admission to check a box indicating if they have, or have not, had an HIV test?  Give two reasons why people think it's a good idea--as suggested by Prof. Glenn McGee in the excerpt above-- and two reasons why people think it's a bad idea.  Explain your own position about the proposal, the basis for the position you are taking, and how your position relates to one or more of the four groups we have studied: Be sure to identify which approach or approaches you are using: Deontology, Intuitionism, Rights or Teleology and how you are applying it/them.
