History Quiz

INSTRUCTIONS:

Please write a short response (about two paragraphs) to only THREE of the following questions. All the source or quotation must come from my history book and PPT that I uploaded. Please cite references from the readings by indicating the title of text and page number in a parenthesis after the quote or reference.   1.Identify three ways in which westward territorial expansion of the South transformed southern slave society in the antebellum period? What was the nature of slavery and was it doomed to fade out of existence by these developments?   2. How was the Republican party of Abraham Lincoln formed in the 1850s? How was it related through the various realignments of parties to the first republican party of Thomas Jefferson? What role did the annexation of Texas and the War with Mexico play in these realignments?    3. Choose two of the readings of reformers (Owen, Hawthorne, Emerson, the women at Seneca Falls, Finney etc.), and discuss what the author thought had gone wrong and should be reformed and how they hoped to achieve this? What did their ideas have to do with each other?   4. How did African-American slaves, Native Americans, Californios, Latinos, and Irish Immigrants (choose three of these) manage to establish some semblance of order and identity in their lives amid the dramatic economic, social, and political developments during the antebellum period? Explain how they contributed to American life in general.   Please write an essay of at least four paragraphs in response to ONLY ONE of the following questions. Be sure to avoid redundancy from section one.     1. The American Republic was a polity based on equality among citizens who constituted “the people” working for the common good. Yet, almost from its origins, that polity faced countervailing dynamics and pressures as a result of various actions of the people themselves. Examine at least three economic, social, or cultural (not political) developments undertaken by the people that increased the underlying tensions and frictions in American life before 1860. How did these tensions affect politics through the late 1850s? Were these tensions and frictions resolved by 1860?   2. In many ways, the Civil War was the culmination of the inability of two increasingly diverse regions, with two very different economies and societies, facing the shifting geopolitics of territorial expansion, to compromise at the national level. Once underway, the war reflected many of those historical developments up to the war. The war, however, itself became something much more.  Driven by the course of military events, it became a crucible of political, social and economic changes that would propel the country to even more dramatic transformations in the decades to come. The war unleashed a number of political, social, cultural, and economic developments that would shape the country for decades to come.  Focusing on two developments – either political, social, economic, or cultural – examine how the Civil War was not just a culmination but also a new beginning, a fulfillment and also a promise that made it into one of the defining events of American history
