Description of the article

The article “heroes to zeroes” written by Becky Francis, digressing from subject to subject analyzing the prevailing education performance shift between the male and the female child. The article was published by Routledge University Press in the year 2006.

The article from Heroes to Zeroes addresses a situation where the boys are seen as underperforming.   The author, Becky (2006) pg. 3, commence the essay by describing the United Kingdom and Australia as having boys who are underachieving and indicates that the issue is spreading over to the other countries. The main argument of the author is that the male child performance in education has drastically reduced comparing to that of a girl child. However, some feminist feel that this is an unfair display which has negative permutations to the school going girls while the boy child has been performing poorly. In providing such a demonstration, the aims to criticize the notion that the girl’s performance has out-striped the male’s achievement for a long time.

The author has used ethnicity as the central theoretical concept. The primary focus of the theme is concentrated on the ethnic comparison rather than gender. Besides, the author pays particular attention to the performance of the black boys. In the begging, the issue concerning the performance of the black was not given sufficient focus until when the educationalist noticed the problem was getting out of hand and had started eating into the education policy with less representation from black Americans compared to the Native Americans. Furthermore, according to Becky (2006) Pg. 9, a neo-liberal capitalist model provides a highly flexible population that various rates of consumption. In a social context, social values may become less and less intricate considering the person’s occupation. This means that when a household does not sufficiently provide for the social needs such as education, I would be difficult to compare the educational performance of the “poor boy’ and the female gender.

Methods

The article draws secondary data from the national statistic, and the research conducted to support the fact that boys do hold very high esteem concerning learning than girls do (Becky; Pg. 13-14, 2006). The author also draws illustrations from the National Health School principles to help improve the boys’ self-confidence by installing a culture that could assist the boy child to speak out any issue that could be haunting their educational performance. In regards to research methods, the author has intensively employed a descriptive research method to address and existing phenomenon. The...
