Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom is more concerned with life and the role that Harriet played in championing for the rights of slaves as well as that of women to take an active role in pollical affairs. The book is set in a historical period, before the emergence of the Civil war. During the period in which the book is set, the slave-trade was predominant, and many communities did not have a way of solving this problem. Slave trade within the South was normally common because of the nature of economic activities. During the period, agricultural activities such as massive plantations of cotton, corn, and sugarcane, among other cash crops, necessitated looking for many people to carry out activities within farms. Due to this high demand for cheap labor, affluent natives engaged in the slave trade to control production factors. It was during this era that Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland in the 1820s.

The book, The Road to Freedom, is an account of a major character, Harriet Tubman.
