Gun Control Legislations Debate

Gun violence is not like an event that people will achieve in a day. The culture of the united states plays a significant role in the legislation of gun control since it is the source of gun violence like the mass shooting in public places (Sowell, 2002). There is a long debate that has existed for a long time with those advocating for stricter measures to the possession and the use of Guns by the public. There are so many cases to consider when tackling the issue of gun control; this may include the capacity of the magazine that the public is allowed to own. The Gun control debate is back in the United States after the recent mass shooting in Boulder, Atlanta, and California. The democrats hold that making gun control stricter may be essential in reducing gun violence, while the republicans disagree that the legislations are theatrics that would not reduce gun violence and mass shooting.

The Republicans argue that the proposed laws aiming at background checks on firearms transfers, sales, and ban assault weapons are “ridiculous theaters” that have failed occasionally to reduce gun violence. Research has found that between 1980 and 2020, there have been 112 events of mass shootings (Eckstein et al., 2017). Eighty-seven percent of the perpetrators were found to have obtained weapons illegally, and 93 percent of the shooters did the shooting within the state that the weapons were obtained. This is proof that the existing laws governing gun control in the states are not working toward reducing mass shootings. It is found that shootings had the tendency to increase in the states with stricter gun regulations. Some of the states with the highest per capita mass shooting rates like California, Connecticut, and Maryland. This research may form the basis for the argument of the republicans that having stricter gun control measures may not be effective in controlling mass shootings and gun violence.  The Republicans’ arguments are supported by research; the existing gun regulations and laws governing gun purchasing across the states are not working in favor of reducing mass shootings. The 18 states that have not registered any single incidence of a mass shooting for the last forty years have registered the highest rates of gun ownership and do not have strict gun control laws (Louis, 2019).

The Democrats argue for restricting gun control by legislation. Stricter gun control laws have the possibility of making mass shootings less frequent rather than the federal gun control laws, policies focusing on prevention of violence at the individual and community level. The democrats have managed to pass two legislations on gun control recently in the US House of Representatives.  The pair of gun control legislation was passed. The first law sought to expand the background checks to people purchasing weapons over the internet and at shows via a private transaction. The bill managed to get the support of Democrats and eight republican legislators. The second bill gives businesses ten days for the federal background that have to be checked before licensing a gun sold in private.  The...
