INSTRUCTIONS:

The following questions refer to the book chapter on Guatemala by Booth, et al. 1. What was the role of the United States in the removal of Jacobo Arbenz Guzm´an, the democratically-elected president of Guatemala, in 1954? What were the motivating factors of the United States government in pursing this action? 2. What were FAR and MR-13 and how did they come into existence in 1960 (kicking off the Guatemalan Civil War)? 3. In the aftermath of the 1996 peace accords that ended the Guatemalan Civil War, what types of economic policies did the next several civilian governments pursue and to what degree did these benefit poor and indigenous Guatemalans? 4. Describe Guatemala’s party system since the end of the Civil War—has it been institutionalized or personalistic? Give two examples to illustrate your point. (NOTE: Institutionalized parties are long-lived and support different candidates across different elections, whereas personalistic parties tend to appear shortly before an election to support a particular candidate and then dissolve before supporting other candidates in future elections.) 5. Describe at least two similarities and two differences between the Civil Wars of Guatemala and El Salvador
