Golda
Meir is recognized as one of the most controversial Israeli prime ministers of
all times. At birth, in 1898, she was christened the name Goldie Mabovitch
later in life she adopted the name, Goldie Myerson. Goldie Meir and her family
migrated from her birthplace in Kiev, Russia to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she
developed an interest in politics and became the leader of Milwaukee Labor Zionist.
Between 1940 and 1960 she was appointed to serve various positions in the
Israeli government most notably heading the ministries of Foreign Affairs and
Labor (Kathrin, 2018). It was in 1969
that Golda Meir was appointed by the Israeli party factions to become the
fourth Prime Minister serving between 1969 and 1974. She was the first and the third woman to hold
that title in Israel and the rest of the world respectively.
Background
Golda Meir was the daughter of Moshe and Bluma Mabovitch. Hagai (2018) asserts that in 1905 during the Kiev pogrom her father boarded up house where mobs killed over 100 Jews. It was after the massacre that together with her family...
