different cultures have diverse ways of understanding and appreciating gender
roles in their respective societies (Nickel, 2017). For example, some cultures
are defined as feminine while others are acknowledged as masculine. The aspect
of masculinity and femininity highlights what is expected of the behaviour of
both women and men in a given social setting. In some countries, men are
supposed to provide for their families, act as the head as well as perform
manly duties. Conversely, in feminine societies, women are allowed to make more
money than their male counterparts, and the concept of “stay at home dad” is
normal. There are significant differences between the gender role expectations
in countries such as the United States and those from other parts world such as
the United Arab Emirates and Russia.
In
Russia, women make up 70 to 75 per cent of the doctors' total population.
According to Reeder (2017), it is assumed that the medical practice is a vocational
career that is suited to women. Within the Soviet psyche, the status of doctors
is perceived as that of blue-collar workers even though they spent almost the
same time American doctors utilise in training. For that reason, the field of
medicine is less valued in Russia because it is female-dominated thus attracts
low pay. However, in the United States, only a third of doctors are women. As a
result, this situation depicts that the concept of medical practice being
masculine is so ingrained in the American society. Gender roles vary from
culture to culture, but the fact is that women are still being discriminated;
even though, the extremity of these actions differs as it depends on the
society in which a woman finds herself.
The gender roles in the United States are less substantial than in the United Arab Emirates where women are only allowed to work if they are permitted to by their fathers or husbands. Women are treated as a property owned by a man. According to Reeder (2017) in a highly patriarchal society, men dictate to women what they should think, where they should go and what they can do.
