INSTRUCTIONS:

What functions does metadata serve?  Could one make a digital archive without metadata?  Most seriously, can one afford to make one with metadata?

Consider the list of digital archives underneath

https://archive.ciser.cornell.edu/explore

and please pick one at random from the website above.  Try to not pick the first one.

Then try to answer: "what do you think you need to say about this data set to catalog it properly?"(this is the answer you need to answer)   This is a discussion of "who would use this and what would they need to know to use it?"
……………………………………………………
Not more than two pages, please, discussing the fields that somebody would actually have to know.  The point is to imagine setting priorities.

Topic 2 (this is not a formal paper, it is a weekly online discussion. write in first person. Just like how you will answer the question. I do not even need citation for this)

What is the best general strategy to decide on the important facets for a collection?  focus groups? surveys? personal experience? exploit social networking/user tagging?
……………………………………………………
What do you think you ought to do, as a "curator" of a collection, to learn what is needed?
……………………………………………………
Note that there is, as usual, no right answer.

You might find useful "Faceted metadata for image search and browsing" by Marti Hearst and colleagues:

I was tempted by
http://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2010/6/92486-managing-scientific-data/fulltext
but to be honest this article goes into too much detail about database technology, which I think of
as a means to an end, and doesn't focus on what the goal of what they are doing is.  If you look
at this you should probably stop reading at or before the "Automation" heading.

Topic 3 (this is not a formal paper, it is a weekly online discussion. write in first person. Just like how you will answer the question. I do not even need citation for this)

Is Dublin Core enough?
(Do this after the writing assignment) (the topic 1 is the writing assignment)
……………………………………………………
So you had to look at one archive for the writing assignment.  Now ask: suppose you wrote down the Dublin Core fields for that archive.  What would be missing, if anything?  What fields would you emphasize (i.e. be sure you got done if the staff time available wasn't enough to do everything?)  This is somewhat the same as the writing assignment but asks you to concentrate on whether Dublin Core in particular is enough for what you need to do.

SOLUTION:

Topic 1

What Functions Does Metadata Serve?

i.        Content Identification

Metadata recognizes content, providing it with an exclusive description differentiating it from other forms of content. Documentation metadata is descriptive; therefore it encompasses the following features, including title, author and unique resource identifier.

ii.      Content Management

Management of content is another important role of metadata. Through managing content metadata ensures that systems understand operations that can be performed on a file...
